How Education, Technology, and Development Can Shape a 21st Century Appalachia
Ryan Osborne is a Development Officer with the University of the Cumberlands. This job involves raising funds for new projects that the university is undertaking.
Ryan is also a member of BRIGHT Kentucky, a program designed to build the capacity of next-generation leaders in the Appalachian region of Kentucky.
Ryan grew up in this area, so Eastern Kentucky feels like home to him. His love of the outdoors helps him to appreciate the landscape that we’re surrounded by in the mountains. On top of that, Ryan says that the people in this region make it unique.
Ryan’s earlier work in economic development taught him to see the big picture of different sectors of the economy can collectively work to move a region forward. He gave us an example of one of these big pictures as he discussed how IT education, reclaimed coal mining sites, broadband connectivity, and displaced coal miners can all work together to bring economic opportunity to our region.
